Purpose Statement
This article explains how an administrator can update Roles and Permissions to give personnel access to First Due LMS courses.
When First Due LMS is initially enabled, LMS access is available to agency administrators. Administrators can update other roles so personnel assigned to those roles can access the Course Library, self-enroll in available LMS courses, and complete assigned LMS training.
Background Information
Access to First Due LMS is controlled through Roles and Permissions.
Agencies using Basic or Advanced Training may already have Training permissions configured for personnel based on their existing roles. Agencies that do not otherwise use the Training module may need to update role permissions before non-administrative personnel can access First Due LMS.
First Due LMS courses do not contain agency-specific operational data or sensitive agency information. As a result, agencies can provide LMS course access to personnel across all roles and levels.
First Due supports granular, role-based access controls, allowing agencies to determine what different user roles can access within Training and LMS functionality.
Required Permissions
You must be an Administrator with access to Admin > Roles and Permissions to complete this process.
The administrator making the change can only assign permissions that are available to their own role.
To allow personnel to access and self-complete First Due LMS courses, enable these two permissions under Training:
- Self-Complete the Assignment
- Training Course Read
If your agency does not use the Basic or Advanced Training module and Training is enabled only for First Due LMS, these may be the only Training permissions available to enable for the applicable personnel role.

Step-by-Step Guide
1. Navigate to Roles and Permissions
- Select the First Due logo/Module Stack in the upper-left corner.
- Select Admin.
- Select Roles and Permissions.
2. Review the Administrator Role
- Locate your agency's administrator role.
- Select the View icon represented by the eye.
- Review the permissions available to the administrator role.
The administrator role represents the maximum permissions available to that role based on the agency's purchased First Due package.
An administrator cannot grant another role a permission that is not available to the administrator's own role.
- Close the administrator role when finished reviewing the available permissions.
3. Select the Role to Update
- Locate the personnel role that should receive First Due LMS access.
For example, this may be a general Fire Department role used by firefighters, paramedics, or other agency personnel.
- Select the Edit icon represented by the pencil.
- Navigate to the role's Permissions section.
4. Navigate to the Permissions Tab
5. Locate the Training Permissions
- Locate or expand the Training permissions.
- Scroll through the available Training permissions.
The available options may vary depending on your agency's Training package and configuration.
If your agency does not use the Training module outside of First Due LMS, other Training permissions may appear unavailable or grayed out.
6. Enable First Due LMS Access
Enable the following two permissions:
- Self-Complete the Assignment
- Training Course Read
Both permissions are required for personnel using the role to access and self-complete their First Due LMS courses.
7. Save the Role
- Confirm that both required permissions are enabled.
- Select Save.
The role is now updated with the required First Due LMS access.
8. Verify the User Experience
After updating the role, verify the permissions using a user assigned to that role.
- Sign in using a user assigned to the updated role.
- Open the Module Stack.
- Select Training.
- Select Course Library.
- Confirm that available First Due LMS courses are displayed.
Personnel with the required permissions can access the available Course Library and use the enrollment option to self-enroll in available courses.
The Training options displayed to these users may be limited compared with those available to administrators. This is expected and depends on the permissions assigned to the role.
Best Practices
- Grant LMS access through the appropriate personnel role rather than adjusting users individually whenever possible.
- Enable both Self-Complete the Assignment and Training Course Read for personnel who need to use First Due LMS.
- Review the administrator role before modifying another role if you are unsure which permissions are available.
- Remember that an administrator cannot grant permissions that their own role does not have.
- After updating a role, verify the change using a user assigned to that role.
- Avoid enabling additional Training permissions unless personnel need those functions for their job responsibilities.
- Review role assignments periodically to ensure personnel continue to have the appropriate level of access.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Why can't personnel see First Due LMS after it was enabled for our agency?
First Due LMS may initially be available only to administrator roles. Review the personnel's assigned role and confirm that Self-Complete the Assignment and Training Course Read are enabled.
Which permissions are required for personnel to use First Due LMS?
Enable Self-Complete the Assignment and Training Course Read under the Training permissions for the applicable role.
Why are some Training permissions grayed out?
Available permissions depend on your agency's purchased Training package and configuration. If your agency uses Training only for First Due LMS, other Training permissions may not be available.
Why can't I enable a specific permission for another role?
An administrator cannot grant a role a permission that is not available to the administrator's own role. Review the administrator role to determine which permissions are available.
Do I need to give personnel full Training access to use First Due LMS?
No. According to the LMS workflow, personnel need Self-Complete the Assignment and Training Course Read to access and self-complete First Due LMS courses.
Why does a user's Training module contain fewer options than an administrator's Training module?
The Training menu reflects the access granted through the user's role. Personnel given only the permissions needed for LMS use will not have the same Training configuration and administrative options available to an administrator.
How can I confirm that the permissions were applied correctly?
Sign in using a user assigned to the updated role, navigate to Training > Course Library, and confirm that the user can view the available LMS courses.
