Purpose Statement
This article explains how to add an MP4 video file to a custom online course in the First Due Training Module.
Adding video content allows course creators to incorporate multimedia instruction into an online course and determine whether viewing the video is required for course completion.
Background Information
Custom online courses can include different types of content as part of the course-building process. Video content can be added by uploading an MP4 file from your device or, when applicable, embedding a video hosted on a supported external website.
Each available content type is optional. The content-building articles are presented according to the order in which the content types appear in the course builder.

Required Permissions
Users must have access to the Training Module, Course Library, and functionality that allows them to create or modify custom online courses.

Step-by-Step Guide
Navigate to the Course Library
Navigate to Training > Course Library.
Select the custom online course you want to edit.
The course must be in Draft status to continue building or modifying its content.
Open the Course Content Area
Navigate to the Course Content section of the course.
Select Add Content.
Select Video to add and configure video content.
Enter the Video Content Name
Enter a descriptive name in the Content Name field.
Use a name that clearly identifies the subject of the video for both course creators and attendees.
Determine Whether the Video Is Required
Enable the Required toggle if attendees must complete the video to receive credit for the course.
Leave the toggle turned off if the video should be included in the course but should not be required for completion.
Upload an MP4 File from Your Device
To use a video stored on your device, browse for the MP4 file using the file-selection option.
You can also drag and drop the video into the designated upload area.
The maximum supported video file size is 1.024 GB.
Embed an External Video
If the video is hosted externally, select Embed.
Enter the appropriate video URL - while any URL may be placed in the field, only videos that allow for embedding can be played.
Verify an Embedded Video Link
After entering the URL, select Open in browser to confirm that the video link was entered correctly and opens the intended content.
Save or Publish the Course
Select Save Draft at the top of the course if additional course-building work is still required.
Select Publish if the course is complete and ready to be made available for attendee enrollment.
Best Practices
- Use clear, descriptive content names so attendees understand the purpose of each video.
- Confirm the MP4 file is within the 1.024 GB file-size limit before uploading.
- Use the Required setting only when the video must be completed to receive course credit.
- Verify embedded YouTube links using Open in browser before publishing the course.
- Review all course content before selecting Publish.
- Use Save Draft when additional content, configuration, or review is still needed.
- Avoid publishing a course until all required course content has been added and verified.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Why can't I add or edit video content in the course?
The option to edit the course is no longer available. Courses in Draft status and those in published but have yet to be assigned are the only statuses that allow further editing. If the course has already been used, a new version must be created.
Why won't my MP4 file upload?
Verify that the file does not exceed the maximum supported size of 1.024 GB.
Can I make a video optional?
Yes. Leave the Required toggle turned off. The video will remain part of the course but will not be required for course completion.
Can I require attendees to complete the video?
Yes. Enable the Required toggle when configuring the video content.
Can I embed a video instead of uploading an MP4?
Yes. Select Embed and enter the video's URL.
Which external video websites are supported?
While any url is supported, only those videos that allow for embedding can be played as part of a course
How can I verify that an embedded video URL is correct?
Select Open in browser after entering the URL to confirm that it opens the intended video.
Should I select Save Draft or Publish?
Select Save Draft if you plan to continue editing the course. Select Publish when the course-building process is complete and the course is ready for attendee enrollment.
