Hydrants Setup: Preferences

Hydrants Setup: Preferences

Purpose Statement

This article outlines how administrators can configure hydrant display preferences within the Hydrant Module. These settings allow customization of hydrant outline and fill colors to improve visual clarity and support operational decision-making based on flow data.

Background Information

The Hydrant Module in First Due enables agencies to manage hydrant data, including location, flow testing, and maintenance records. The Hydrant Setup Preferences allow administrators to define how hydrants appear on the map, enhancing usability for field personnel and supervisors. Color-coding based on flow rates supports NFPA 291 compliance and helps identify hydrant capabilities at a glance.

Required Permissions

Only users with Admin or Configuration permissions can create, edit, or delete Hydrant Zones. These permissions can be managed under Admin > Roles & Permissions > Hydrant Module.
  1. Hydrant Setup--Allows for access and editing of the Hydrant Setup Area

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Navigate to the Hydrants Module, then select the Hydrant Setup and finally select Preferences.

  2. Set Hydrant Outline Color
    1. White Outline
    2. Black Outline

  3. Configure Hydrants Color by selecting one of the following hydrant colors:
    1. Hydrant Base Color--Allows manual color selection for each hydrant and is not based on flow data.
    2. Calculated Flow Rate-- Automatically updates hydrant color based on theoretical flow rate which is derived from flow test data entered in First Due. (Uses NFPA 291 color standards)
    3. Hydrant Flow Rate--Automatically updates hydrant color based on actual flow rate and reflects real-world flow test results. (Also follows NFPA 291 color standards)

Best Practices

  1. Use Calculated Flow Rate for planning and theoretical analysis
  2. Use Hydrant Flow Rate for operational readiness and field accuracy
  3. Avoid manual base color unless customization is required for non-flow reasons
  4. Ensure flow tests are regularly updated to maintain accurate color coding

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Q: Why isn’t the hydrant color updating after a flow test?
A: Ensure the flow test was completed and saved correctly. Check that the hydrant is set to use either Calculated or Flow Rate coloring.

Q: Can I override the automatic color?
A: Yes, by selecting Hydrant Base Color, you can manually assign colors.

Q: What if my agency uses different flow thresholds?
A: NFPA 291 is the default standard. Custom thresholds may require manual color assignment or system customization.
