Command Setup: Quick Links

Command Setup: Quick Links

Purpose Statement

  1. This feature allows users to create, edit, and manage quick links within the Command Module, providing instant access to external web pages and documents directly from the command board. Quick links enhance operational efficiency by eliminating the need to search for frequently used resources during critical incident response situations, ensuring commanders have immediate access to essential external information.

Background Information

  1. The Quick Links feature in the Command Module streamlines access to external resources that are frequently referenced during emergency operations. These links can direct users to weather services, mapping resources, mutual aid contact information, standard operating procedures, evacuation plans, or any web-based resource critical to incident management. Quick links are accessible directly from the command board interface, reducing response time and improving decision-making capabilities during active incidents.

Required Permissions

  • Users must have the appropriate level of the Incident Commands Templates permission configured in their role:
    • Read: View command boards in read-only mode
    • Update: Modify command board settings and information
    • Create: Initiate new command boards and add custom items
    • Delete: Remove command board elements and complete incidents

Best Practices

  • Use Descriptive Names: Create clear, concise names that immediately identify the resource's purpose (e.g., "National Weather Service," "Mutual Aid Directory," "Evacuation Routes")
  • Verify URLs Before Saving: Always test links before saving to ensure they direct to the correct resource
  • Organize by Priority: Arrange frequently used links at the top of the list for quick access during emergencies
  • Regular Maintenance: Periodically review and test all quick links to ensure they remain active and accurate
  • Standardize Naming Conventions: Use consistent naming patterns across your organization for easy recognition
  • Include Protocol Resources: Add links to relevant SOPs, emergency contact lists, and regulatory guidance documents
  • Consider Mobile Compatibility: Ensure linked resources are mobile-friendly for field personnel access

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Q: Why doesn't my quick link work when clicked?
A: Verify the URL is complete and includes http:// or https://. Test the link in a separate browser window to ensure it's functional.

Q: Can I organize quick links in a specific order?
A: Quick links typically appear in the order they were created. Contact your system administrator about reordering options if available.

Q: How many quick links can I create?
A: There is no specified limit, but consider keeping the list manageable for operational efficiency during emergency situations.

Q: Can I link to internal documents or files?
A: Quick links are designed for web-based resources. Internal documents should be accessible via web URLs or hosted on your organization's web servers.

Q: Why can't other users see my quick links?
A: Quick links are typically system-wide configurations. Ensure you have proper permissions and that changes have been saved correctly.

Q: Can I include links that require login credentials?
A: Yes, but users will need to authenticate when accessing those resources. Consider the operational impact during emergency situations.
