Purpose Statement

Quiz Builder provides several question types that allow training administrators to create knowledge checks based on different learning objectives. Questions can assess simple recall, multiple correct responses, written comprehension, calculations, matching concepts, procedural sequencing, and fill-in-the-blank responses.

This article explains the question types available in Quiz Builder, how each question type is configured, and the options available when building a quiz.

Background Information

Quiz Builder is available within the Training module and is used to create quizzes and knowledge checks that can be incorporated into courses.

When building a quiz, users can add new questions or search for existing questions. Quiz questions can also be randomized, presented sequentially, or manually reordered.

Available question types include:

• Single Select
• Multi-Select
• True/False
• Free Text
• Numeric
• Matching
• Ordering
• Fill in the Blank

After the quiz is configured, it can be previewed, saved as a draft, or published for use within Course Builder.

Required Permissions

Users must have access to the Training module and the appropriate agency-configured permissions to create or manage quizzes within Quiz Builder.

First Due uses role-based permissions to control access to system functions. If Quiz Builder or Create Quiz is unavailable, contact an agency administrator to review the user's Training permissions.

Step-by-Step Guide

Open Quiz Builder

• Navigate to Training.
• Select Quiz Builder.
• Select Create Quiz.
• Open the Quiz Questions section.

Manage Quiz Questions

Within the Question area, users can:

1. Select Add New Question to create a question.
2. Search for an existing question using the search field.
3. Enable the applicable question-order option to randomize questions or require sequential ordering.

• Reorder questions manually by selecting the handle on the left side of a question and dragging it to the desired location.

Create a Single Select Question

Single Select functions like a traditional multiple-choice question. Only one answer can be designated as correct.  Select Add Question on the left of the page and press Single Select and then Add Question.

1. Enter the Question Text.
2. Enable Required to Pass if the learner must answer this question correctly to pass.
3. Configure whether the answer choices should be presented in a random order.
4. Select whether the answer choices should be identified using numbers or letters.
5. Select Add Choice.
   • Enter an answer in the provided field.
   • Continue adding additional Answer options in the same manner

6. Select the checkbox for the correct answer.

   When an answer is designated as correct, the correct-answer field displays in green.

Create a Multi-Select Question

Multi-Select operates similarly to Single Select, but more than one answer can be correct.  Select 'Add Question' on the left and press Multi Select.

1. Enter the Question Text.
2. Configure Required to Pass if needed - If enabled this means the questions must be answered correctly to pass the quiz.
3. Enable Randomize answer order if necessary. 
4. Select how answer options will be presented; either in numbers or letters
5. Add the available answer choices.
6. Select the checkbox for each answer that should be considered correct.

Create a True/False Question

Use True/False when the learner needs to determine whether a statement is true or false.  Select Add Question on the left, press True/False and then 'Add Question' 

1. Enter the Question Text.
2. Enable Required to Pass if applicable - If enabled this means the questions must be answered correctly to pass the quiz.
3. Select True or False as the correct answer.

Create a Free Text Question

Free Text is intended for interpretive, short-answer, or essay-style questions. Select 'Add Question' on the left, press Free Text and then 'Add Question'

1. Enter the Question Text.
2. Enable Required to Pass if applicable - - If enabled this means the questions must be answered correctly to pass the quiz.

Free Text responses require manual grading after the learner submits the quiz.

Create a Numeric Question

Use a Numeric question when the learner must provide a numerical value. Select 'Add Question' on the left, press Numeric and then 'Add Question' in the modal.

1. Enter the Question Text.
2. Enable Required to Pass if applicable - - If enabled this means the questions must be answered correctly to pass the quiz.
3. Configure the correct response as either:
   • An exact value.
   • A range of acceptable values.

Using a range can account for acceptable differences caused by rounding or calculation methods.

Create a Matching Question

Matching questions require learners to correctly associate terms with their corresponding definitions. Select 'Add Question' from the left, press Matching and then press 'Add Question' in the modal.

1. Enter the Question Text.
2. Enable Required to Pass if applicable - If enabled this means the questions must be answered correctly to pass the quiz.
3. Enter a Term.
4. Enter the matching definition in the field to the right.
   • Continue adding terms and definitions until all matching pairs have been created.
5. If needed, add distractor values.

Distractors do not have a matching term and can be used to make the question more challenging.

When the learner takes the quiz, the definitions are presented in a randomized order.

Create an Ordering Question

Use an Ordering question when learners need to arrange items into the correct sequence, such as the steps of a procedure or order of operations.  Select 'Add Question' from the left, press Ordering and select 'Add Question from the modal.

• Enter the Question Text.
• Enable Required to Pass if applicable - If enabled this means the questions must be answered correctly to pass the quiz.
• Configure Randomize Items Order as needed.
• Select Add Step.
• Enter each item that belongs in the sequence.
• After all steps have been added, arrange the items in their correct order by grabbing the handle on the left and moving it to the correct location.

The quiz can randomize the items when they are presented to the learner, requiring the learner to place them back into the correct sequence.

Create a Fill in the Blank Question

Fill in the Blank questions allow learners to enter one or more missing terms within a statement. Select 'Add Question on the left, press 'Fill in the Blank' and select 'Add Question from the modal.

1. Enter introductory Question Text if needed.

   For example: Complete the following statement by filling in the blank.

2. Enable Required to Pass if applicable - If enabled this means the questions must be answered correctly to pass the quiz.
3. Begin entering the statement containing the missing information.
4. Position the cursor where the missing value should appear.
5. Select Add Blank.

1. In the modal, enter a name for the blank.
2. Configure the available matching options as needed:
   • Case Sensitive Matching controls how capitalization is evaluated.
     • When enabled, learners are not required to correctly capitalize their answer
   • Trim Whitespace prevents leading or trailing spaces from affecting answer evaluation.
3. Enter an accepted answer.
4. Select Add.
   • Add additional accepted answers when multiple responses should be considered correct.
5. Select Save at the bottom after all acceptable answers have been entered

For example, if the preferred response is increases, an alternative response such as goes up could also be configured as an accepted answer.

• If the statement requires additional blanks, continue entering the statement and repeat the process for each blank.

Preview and Save the Quiz

After all questions have been configured:

• Select Preview to review the quiz from the learner's perspective.
• Select Save as Draft if the quiz is not ready for use.
• Select Publish when the quiz is complete.

Publishing makes the quiz available for use within Course Builder.

Best Practices

• Match the question type to the skill or knowledge being evaluated.
• Use Single Select or True/False for straightforward knowledge checks.
• Use Multi-Select when more than one response must be identified.
• Use Free Text only when manual grading is appropriate for the training workflow.
• Use an acceptable numeric range when minor rounding differences should not result in an incorrect response.
• Use distractors in Matching questions carefully so they challenge learners without creating unnecessary confusion.
• Arrange Ordering questions in the correct sequence before saving.
• Add reasonable alternative answers to Fill in the Blank questions when synonyms or equivalent terminology are acceptable.
• Preview the quiz before publishing to confirm question order, answer options, formatting, and grading behavior.
• Use Required to Pass only for questions that represent knowledge or skills learners must demonstrate successfully.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Why can't I see Quiz Builder or the Create Quiz option?

Your assigned role may not include the appropriate Training or Quiz Builder access. Contact an agency administrator to review your permissions.

Can I change the order of questions in a quiz?

Yes. Use the handle on the left side of a question to drag it to a new position. Quiz-level settings can also control whether questions are randomized or presented sequentially.

Can a Single Select question have more than one correct answer?

No. Single Select allows only one correct response. Use Multi-Select when multiple answers should be correct.

Why does a Free Text question require manual grading?

Free Text responses are interpretive rather than automatically matched against a predefined answer. The learner's response must therefore be reviewed and graded manually.

Can Numeric questions allow for rounding differences?

Yes. Numeric questions can use a range instead of requiring one exact value.

What is a distractor in a Matching question?

A distractor is an additional definition or value that does not belong to one of the matching pairs. It is included to make the learner identify the correct matches rather than relying solely on elimination.

Can Fill in the Blank questions have more than one accepted answer?

Yes. Multiple accepted answers can be configured to account for synonyms or different acceptable ways of expressing the same answer.

Can I review a quiz before learners receive it?

Yes. Use Preview to review the quiz before publishing it.

When does a quiz become available in Course Builder?

The quiz becomes available for use in Course Builder after it is published.
