Inspections Map

Purpose Statement

The Inspections Map provides a geographic view of all inspections, allowing users to visualize locations, track statuses, and efficiently navigate between inspection activities. This feature enhances situational awareness and improves field productivity by enabling real-time location-based decision-making.

Background Information

The Inspections Map is accessible from multiple areas within the Inspections module, including:

  • Inspections Organizer
  • Inspections List
  • My Inspections

This feature is particularly useful for field personnel conducting inspections throughout the day, as it allows them to:

  • View inspection locations geographically
  • Identify nearby inspections
  • Quickly access and manage inspection records

Filters applied in the inspections list will also reflect on the map, allowing for targeted views based on status, date, or other criteria.

Required Permissions

Users must have the following permissions:

  • Access to the Inspections Module
  • Permission to View Inspections
  • Permission to Edit or Start Inspections (if taking action from the map)
  • Access to Pre-Plan and Occupancy Records (optional, for extended functionality)

Permissions are typically assigned to:

  • Fire Inspectors
  • Prevention Officers
  • Supervisors
  • Administrators

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Navigate to Inspections

  1. From the main dashboard, select Inspections
  2. Choose one of the following:
    • Inspections Organizer
    • Inspections List
    • My Inspections

2. Apply Filters 

  1. Use the filter options to narrow down inspections
  2. Apply criteria such as date, status, or assigned user

3. Open the Map Feature

  1. Locate the Map icon in the upper right corner
  2. Click Inspections Map

4. Adjust Map View

  1. Click Full Screen to expand the map
  2. Select Center to Me to focus on your current location
  3. Use mouse or controls to:
    • Pan (move side-to-side/up-down)
    • Zoom in or out

5. Use Street View (Pegman Tool)

  1. Drag the Pegman icon onto a street (will highlight in light blue)
  2. View the surrounding area at street level
  3. Click the Arrow in the top left to exit Street View

6. Customize Map Display

  1. Toggle between Map Views:
    • Satellite View
    • Map View
  2. Enable or disable Labels

7. Interpret Inspection Icons

Different icons represent inspection statuses:

  • Completed
  • Completed with Citations
  • Completed with Failures
  • In Progress
  • Scheduled
  • Cancelled
  • Pending Review

8. Interact with Inspection Markers

  1. Click on any inspection icon
  2. Perform available actions:
    • Start Inspection (for scheduled)
    • Continue Inspection (for in-progress)
    • View Violation History
    • Edit Pre-Plan
    • Open Dashboard

9. Exit the Map

  1. Click the X to close the map view

  • Apply filters before opening the map to reduce clutter
  • Use Center to Me when working in the field for quick navigation
  • Leverage Satellite View for better location context in rural or undeveloped areas
  • Use Street View to preview site access and surroundings before arrival
  • Regularly update inspection statuses to maintain map accuracy

Q: Why don’t I see any inspections on the map?
A: Ensure filters are not excluding results and verify inspections exist for the selected criteria.

Q: My location is not centering correctly. What should I do?
A: Check that location services are enabled on your device/browser.

Q: I cannot start or edit inspections from the map. Why?
A: Verify your user permissions allow editing or initiating inspections.

Q: The map is slow or not loading properly.
A: Try refreshing the page, checking your internet connection, or reducing the number of filtered results.
