Purpose Statement
This article explains how class creators can create a new training in First Due, either from scratch or by using an existing template. Creating training accurately ensures proper scheduling, reporting, and credit assignment for personnel while maintaining data integrity across the Training Module.
Background Information
Training can be created for future scheduled sessions or to record training that has already occurred. First Due provides two creation paths to support different workflows:
Creating a training without a predefined template
Creating a training directly from the Template Library
Using templates helps standardize courses, categories, and reporting, while creating a training without a template offers flexibility for one-off or external training events.
Required Permissions
The ability to create training classes depends on user role and permissions.
Common permissions include:
Create Training Classes – Required to add a class without a course template
View Template Library – Required to browse and use courses from the Course Library
Manage Training Classes – Required to edit class details and complete classes
Some fields or actions may be locked or hidden based on permissions or course configuration.

Step-by-Step Guide
Choose How to Create a Training
Training creators can establish an activity in one of two ways:
Open the Actions dropdown and select Add Training
Select Add from Training Templates
Both methods can be used to record completed training or schedule future classes.
Option 1: Add Training (Without a Template)
Open the Actions dropdown.
Select Add Training.
This option is permissions-based and may not be available to all users.
A new training opens without a predefined template.
Enter all class details manually, including Categories, Topics and courses as needed.
Use this option for:
External or custom training
One-time sessions not tied to a standardized course
Option 2: Add from Training Templates
Select Add from Training Templates.
A modal opens displaying the Template Library.
Use the filter options at the top to refine the list.
Select the view icon to review Template details such as:
Categories
Topics
Courses
Select the checkbox to the left of the Template.
Select Use Template at the bottom of the modal.
This action opens the Create Training Session screen.
Edit Training Class Details
Review all pre-filled fields.
Some fields may be locked depending on how the course template was built.
Editing pre-filled values can impact backend reporting and should be done with caution.

Best Practices
Use Add from Template whenever possible to maintain standardized reporting.
Avoid editing pre-filled template fields unless absolutely necessary.
Always enter actual start and end times when recording completed training.
Use self-complete only when objectives are designed for independent completion.
Attach supporting documents to reduce follow-up questions from attendees.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Why can’t I see the Add Training option?
Your role may not include permissions to create classes without a template.
Why are some fields locked when using a template?
Locked fields are controlled by the course setup to ensure reporting consistency.
Will associating apparatus or assets add them to the class roster?
No. These associations are for tracking and reporting only.
Does self-complete automatically complete the class?
No. Self-complete applies to objectives only. An admin or instructor must still complete the training activity.
