Hydrants Module UI & Workflow Updates (List, Map, Service Tests, Flow Tests)

Hydrants Module UI & Workflow Updates (List, Map, Service Tests, Flow Tests)

Purpose Statement

This update introduces the first in a series of Hydrants Module improvements designed to make hydrant management faster, clearer, and more intuitive. The changes improve menu visibility, reduce hidden actions, and streamline key workflows so users can complete tasks efficiently on desktop or tablet devices.

Background Information

The Hydrants Module is used by Fire/EMS agencies to manage hydrant records, map locations, and document testing and maintenance. This update focuses on user experience and workflow improvements across four main areas:

  • Hydrants List: easier filtering, viewing, and action access

  • Hydrant Map: improved button placement and layout consistency

  • Service Tests: faster navigation through checklist categories and cleaner completion paths

  • Flow Tests: simplified layout, improved usability on smaller devices, and modal-based editing

Important reminder about hydrant sync:
If your department uses an automated sync to populate hydrant data, most manual add/edit functions may not be needed. Always confirm with your department administrator before changing hydrant details manually.

Required Permissions

To use the updated Hydrants Module features, users generally need permissions that allow viewing and (when applicable) editing hydrant data. Exact permission names may vary by configuration, but roles should include access to:

  • View Hydrants
Required to open the Hydrants List, Map, and hydrant detail records.

  • Edit Hydrants / Manage Hydrants (if your agency allows manual changes)
Required to update hydrant details or modify hydrant fields.

  • Add Hydrants (if your agency allows manual adds)
Required to create new hydrant records from the List or Map.

  • Run Service Tests
Required to complete service test checklists and submit outcomes.

  • Run Flow Tests / View Flow Reports
Required to complete flow tests, edit flow fields, and view reports.

  • Create Work Orders from Hydrants (if your agency uses Work Orders)
Required for completion paths that generate work orders.

If your hydrants are synced and you do not see add/edit options, that may be intentional based on your department settings.

Step-by-Step Guide - Pictures shown below are side by side with the new user interface on the left

Access the Hydrants Module

  • From the main navigation menu, open Hydrants.

  • Select Hydrants List to view all hydrant records.

Use the Updated Hydrants List

  • Open Filters

    • Filters are now in a slide-out panel on the right side of the screen.

    • Select the filter icon or panel toggle to expand/collapse filters.

  • Select Table Columns

    • At the top of the list, open the Columns menu.

    • Choose which columns you want displayed in the table.

  • Saved Views

    • Saved views are now located on the top right of the Hydrants List

    • All saved view administration is handled through the 3 dots to the right of the saved view dropdown

  • Use Individual Hydrant Actions

    • Actions for a hydrant are now easier to find.

    • Select the three-dot menu on a hydrant row to view available actions.

  • Use Bulk Actions

    • Bulk options stay hidden until you select multiple hydrants.

    • Once hydrants have been selected in Bulk, two buttons appear above the search bar allowing for Bulk Update or Bulk Service

Use the Updated Hydrant Map
  • From the Hydrants Module, open Hydrant Map.

  • Review the updated button placement:

    • Saved Views

    • More Actions

    • Filter

    • Add Hydrant
These controls are now relocated for clearer access and better screen layout.

  • Use Saved Views

    • Saved Views at the top of the Map match the Saved Views created on the Hydrants List.

  • Access Work Queue

    • The Work Queue button is now persistent on the Map for quick access.

    • Work Queue is also available on the Hydrants List for consistent navigation.

Complete a Service Test (Updated Workflow)

  • Open a hydrant record and select Service Test.

  • Use the new Categories tabs at the top to jump between checklist sections.

  • When finished, select Complete dropdown menu.

  • Choose one completion outcome from the dropdown:

    • Complete

    • Complete and Create Work Order

    • Complete and Start Flow Test

  • If you choose Complete and Create Work Order:

    • The summary step is simplified — select only the fields you want included.

Complete a Flow Test (Updated Workflow)

  • Open a hydrant record and select Flow Test.

  • Use the new Sections tabs at the top to move between test areas quickly.

  • Access key actions at the top of the page:

    • View Report

    • Create Work Order

  • Note layout changes:

    • Hydrant information appears at the top (not on the left).

    • Flow hydrant readings show in a cleaner table optimized for small screens.

  • To add or edit flow fields (Outlet Size, Coefficient, Pitot Gauge, Flow):

    • Select the pencil/edit icon.

    • Make changes in the modal window, then save.

Best Practices

  • Customize your list view. Use column selection to highlight fields your role needs most.

  • Use Saved Views for repeat work. Saved Views on the List and Map keep your workflow consistent.

  • Leverage Work Queue daily. The persistent button is meant to support ongoing maintenance tasks.

  • Navigate with tabs. In Service and Flow tests, tabs reduce scrolling and speed up completion.

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Where did the filters dropdown go?
Filters are now in a right-side slide-out panel. Expand it to apply filters.

Why don’t bulk actions show up?
Bulk tools only appear after selecting multiple hydrants to keep the list uncluttered.

I can’t find the Work Queue.
Work Queue is now a persistent button on both the Hydrants List and Hydrant Map. If you still don’t see it, check permissions.

Editing Flow Test fields looks different — is that expected?
Yes. Flow-related fields now open in a modal when using the pencil/edit icon, improving usability on smaller devices.

Additional Considerations

  • Ongoing updates: This is the first of several Hydrants Module user experience improvements. Expect more layout and workflow enhancements over the coming weeks.

  • Training recommendation: When rolling this out, demonstrate the List and Map changes first, then walk users through the updated Service Test and Flow Test flows in sequence.
