The ITM Business Name Update feature allows Business Portal users to add or modify business names during ITM submissions for existing locations, while providing AHJ users with review capabilities to ensure location record accuracy. This feature addresses real-world scenarios where business ownership changes, rebranding occurs, or corrections are needed to maintain accurate fire prevention records.
Background Information
Business names at existing locations frequently change due to ownership transfers, rebranding efforts, or the need to correct previous data entry errors. Previously, service providers could not update business names during ITM submissions, leading to outdated location records that could impact fire prevention operations, inspection scheduling, and emergency response planning.
The ITM Business Name Update feature creates a controlled workflow where service providers can propose name changes that are flagged for AHJ review before updating official location records. This ensures data integrity while streamlining the process for keeping business information current.
Common Use Cases:
New business ownership at existing locations
Corporate rebranding requiring name updates
Correction of typos or formatting errors in business names
Adding business names to locations that previously had none
Prerequisites:
Active Business Portal account with ITM submission capabilities
Proper role-based permissions for business name editing
Existing location records in the fire prevention system
Required Permissions
Business Portal Users:
ITM Manager – Full Access: Includes both business name creation and editing permissions
ITM Business Name Editor: Stackable role containing only business name permissions, designed to work with other ITM roles

Use consistent formatting and capitalization standards
Double-check spelling, especially for unique business names
Submit name changes promptly when ownership or branding changes occur
General Guidelines:
Avoid using special characters or excessive punctuation in business names
Maintain consistency with existing departmental naming conventions
Consider how the business name will appear on reports and official documentation
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Q: Why don't I see the "Edit Business Name" button?
A: You need either the "ITM Manager – Full Access" role or the "ITM Business Name Editor" role. Contact your system administrator to verify your permissions.
Q: The pending business name banner won't disappear. What's wrong?
A: The banner remains until the AHJ completes their review decision or you revert the name to its original state. If the AHJ has completed their review, try refreshing your browser.
Q: I entered a new business name but no pending reason was created. Why?
A: If your proposed name exactly matches the existing name (after removing extra spaces and ignoring capitalization), the system doesn't create a pending reason since no actual change occurred.
Q: What happens to my ITM submission if the business name is rejected?
A: The ITM is marked as rejected and returned to you with the rejection reason. Your credits are restored to your account, and you can resubmit with corrections.
Q: Can I change a business name multiple time before AHJ review?
A: Yes, you can modify the proposed business name multiple times while the ITM is in draft status. Only the final submitted version will be flagged for AHJ review.
