Purpose Statement

The Life Safety Systems feature provides Fire Prevention and Inspection personnel with a centralized view of life safety systems associated with an Occupancy. This allows users to review and manage systems such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire pumps, and other suppression systems without navigating through the standard Pre-Planning workflow.

Life Safety Systems use existing Pre-Plan Unit records. Adding, editing, or deleting a Life Safety System also updates the corresponding Pre-Plan Unit.

Background Information

Life Safety Systems are Pre-Plan Units whose Pre-Plan Unit Type is configured as a Life Safety System. They are not separate records.

This allows the same system information to be accessed from two locations:

• Pre-Planning provides access to the unit as part of the occupancy's pre-plan, including placement on the map.
• Life Safety Systems provides a dedicated list of applicable systems associated with the occupancy.

Changes made in either location affect the same underlying Pre-Plan Unit. For example, deleting a system from Life Safety Systems also removes the corresponding unit from Pre-Planning.

When a Life Safety System is added from the Life Safety Systems tab, it initially appears as an unmapped Pre-Plan Unit. The unit can then be placed on the Pre-Plan map.

Predefined Life Safety System unit types may include additional system-specific data points. Custom Pre-Plan Unit Types can also be designated as Life Safety Systems, but the available data collection options for custom types are more limited.

Required Permissions

Life Safety Systems use existing Pre-Plan permissions to determine what users can view and manage.

Users without the appropriate edit or delete permissions will be limited to the actions allowed by their assigned role.

Note: Because Life Safety Systems use existing Pre-Plan Units, permissions that control Pre-Plan access also control access to these records.

Step-by-Step Guide

Configure a Pre-Plan Unit Type as a Life Safety System

1. Navigate to the Pre-Planning configuration area.

2. Open Pre-Plan Unit Types.

   

3. Review the available unit types. Use the Life Safety System filter or search option to identify unit types configured as Life Safety Systems.

   

4. To create a custom unit type, select New Pre-Plan Unit Type.
5. Enter the required information for the new unit type.

6. Enable Is this a Life Safety System? to designate the unit type as a Life Safety System.

   

7. Save the new unit type.

Important: Custom Pre-Plan Unit Types designated as Life Safety Systems may have fewer available data points than predefined Life Safety System unit types.

Manage Life Safety System Unit Types

1. Navigate to Pre-Planning > Pre-Plan Unit Types.
2. Locate the desired Life Safety System unit type.
3. Depending on the unit type and available actions, you can:
   • Enable or disable the unit type.
   • Add the unit type to your Favorites.

   • Edit or delete custom unit types created by your agency.

     

4. Use the Life Safety System search/filter to review the complete list of unit types designated as Life Safety Systems.

Access Life Safety Systems from an Occupancy

1. Open the desired Occupancy record.

2. Select Life Safety Systems.

   

3. Review the Life Safety Systems currently associated with the occupancy.

Only Pre-Plan Units with a Unit Type designated as a Life Safety System appear in this area.

Add a Life Safety System

1. Open the desired Occupancy.
2. Select Life Safety Systems.

3. Select Add System.

   

4. Choose the appropriate Life Safety System unit type.
   • Favorited unit types are available for quicker selection.

   • Other available Life Safety System types can be selected from the full list.

     

5. Complete the available data fields for the selected system.

Available fields vary based on the selected Life Safety System type. Predefined types may provide additional system-specific data points.

6. Add files, pictures, or other available information as needed.
7. Select Accept to add the system.

The Life Safety System is also added to the occupancy's Pre-Planning record as an unmapped Pre-Plan Unit.

Place a Life Safety System on the Pre-Plan Map

1. After adding a system from Life Safety Systems, open Pre-Planning for the same Occupancy.

2. Locate the newly created system in the list of unmapped units.

   

3. Drag the unit onto the appropriate location on the Pre-Plan map.
4. Save the Pre-Plan as needed.

The mapped Pre-Plan Unit and the entry displayed under Life Safety Systems represent the same record.

Add a Life Safety System from Pre-Planning

1. Open the desired Occupancy.
2. Navigate to Pre-Planning.

3. Add a Pre-Plan Unit using a Unit Type designated as a Life Safety System.

   

4. Place the unit at the appropriate location on the map.
5. Enter the available information for the unit.
6. Save the unit and Pre-Plan by clicking on the Save for the Occupancy Record.
7. Navigate to Life Safety Systems.

The unit is automatically displayed in the Life Safety Systems list because its Unit Type is designated as a Life Safety System.

Edit a Life Safety System

1. Open Life Safety Systems for the desired Occupancy.
2. Locate the system you want to modify.

3. Select the Edit action.

   

4. Update the applicable information.
5. Select Update to save the changes.

Because the Life Safety System and Pre-Plan Unit are the same record, the changes are also reflected in Pre-Planning.

Delete a Life Safety System

1. Open Life Safety Systems for the desired Occupancy.
2. Locate the system you want to remove.

3. Select Delete.

   

4. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Deleting the Life Safety System also removes the corresponding Pre-Plan Unit. Likewise, deleting the corresponding unit through Pre-Planning removes it from the Life Safety Systems list.

Best Practices

• Use the predefined Life Safety System unit types when the additional system-specific data points are needed.
• Create custom Life Safety System unit types only when an appropriate predefined type is not available.
• Use Favorites to make frequently used Life Safety System types easier to access.
• Enter available system details, files, and pictures to provide personnel with useful occupancy information.
• After creating a Life Safety System from the Life Safety Systems tab, review Pre-Planning and place the unmapped unit in the appropriate map location when needed.
• Remember that Life Safety Systems and Pre-Plan Units reference the same records. Do not create a second system in Pre-Planning simply because an existing Life Safety System is already present.
• Confirm that a system should be removed before deleting it. Deleting it from either interface affects both locations.

Why can't I see the Life Safety Systems tab?

Verify that your user role has the appropriate Pre-Plan permissions, including access to view Pre-Plan information.

Why isn't a Pre-Plan Unit appearing under Life Safety Systems?

Verify that its Pre-Plan Unit Type is designated as a Life Safety System. Only applicable unit types appear in the Life Safety Systems view.

Why did a system I deleted from Life Safety Systems disappear from Pre-Planning?

This is expected. Life Safety Systems are existing Pre-Plan Units rather than separate records. Deleting the system removes the corresponding Pre-Plan Unit.

Why did a Life Safety System disappear after I deleted a unit from Pre-Planning?

The two interfaces use the same underlying record. Removing the Pre-Plan Unit also removes it from Life Safety Systems.

Why does a system I added from Life Safety Systems appear as unmapped in Pre-Planning?

Systems created from the Life Safety Systems tab are not automatically placed on the Pre-Plan map. Open Pre-Planning, locate the unmapped unit, and drag it to the appropriate map location.

Why does one Life Safety System have more fields than another?

Available data points vary by Life Safety System unit type. Predefined system types may contain additional system-specific data collection fields, while custom unit types have more limited data collection options.

Can I create my own Life Safety System type?

Yes. When creating a custom Pre-Plan Unit Type, enable Is this a Life Safety System? to make it available as a Life Safety System.

Why can't I edit or delete a Life Safety System?
