Inspections: Form Builder Management

Purpose Statement

To explain the tools and controls used to effectively manage the Form Builder within the Inspections module. This feature enables administrators and training officers to create, edit, and customize inspection forms by adding, configuring, and managing various block types to meet specific departmental inspection requirements.

Background Information

The Form Builder Management system provides comprehensive tools for creating and maintaining inspection forms used across fire prevention, building inspections, and compliance activities. This feature allows departments to customize forms with various block types including headers, headings, tags, and other elements to capture all necessary inspection data. Understanding these management tools is essential for maintaining accurate and efficient inspection workflows.

Required Permissions

Based on the administrative nature of form building, users typically need:

  • Inspections Module Access - Base permission to access inspection features
  • Form Builder Access - Permission to create and edit inspection forms
  • Administrative Permissions - May require elevated permissions for form creation and deletion
Warning: When deleting an Inspection Form, it will remove the bulk of the form from any associated Inspections.

Step-by-Step Guide





1.  Navigate to Inspections > Inspection Form Builder.






2.  Select Create Form or edit an existing form.

3.  To add or edit a block, hover the mouse pointer in the left margin of the form.






4.  The icon adds a new block immediately below the existing one.

5.  The double kabob  is the "tune" control. Each block type has slightly different tools to "tune" your block as desired.  Many of the same tools are utilized in different blocks in form builder.

  • Plan Your Form Structure - Map out required fields and sections before building
  • Test Form Functionality - Create test inspections to verify form behavior before deployment
  • Use Consistent Block Naming - Maintain clear, descriptive names for easy identification
  • Regular Form Review - Periodically review and update forms to ensure continued relevance
  • Backup Before Major Changes - Consider the impact of edits on existing inspections
  • Train Users on New Forms - Ensure field personnel understand any form changes

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Q: What happens to existing inspections when I delete a form? A: Deleting an inspection form will remove the bulk of the form structure from any associated inspections. This action cannot be undone, so proceed with extreme caution.

Q: Can I reorder blocks after creating them? A: Use the block management tools in the left margin to reorganize block order as needed.

Q: Why can't I see the tune controls? A: Ensure you're hovering directly in the left margin of the form where the block controls appear.

Q: Are there limits to the number of blocks I can add? A: Check with your system administrator for any platform-specific limitations on form complexity.
