Purpose Statement
This article explains the steps necessary to move an individual from one assignment to another using the Move Employeefunctionality.
This feature is available on both desktop and mobile app, ensuring personnel can be placed in the appropriate assignment and position in real time to meet operational needs.
Background Information
The Move Employee function allows supervisors and authorized users to reassign personnel between assignments and positions directly from the Shift Board.
Common use cases include:
- Rebalancing staffing levels during a shift
- Filling vacancies after call-offs
- Adjusting apparatus staffing
- Changing work types (e.g., Regular, Overtime, Callback)
This action immediately updates the Shift Board and ensures payroll, reporting, and staffing views reflect the change.
Required Permissions
The following Scheduling permissions are required:
- Scheduling – Access Scheduling
- Scheduling – Access Shift Board
- Scheduling – Add/edit personnel into shift board
Additional permissions may apply depending on department configuration.

Step-by-Step Guide
Access the Shift Board
- Click the First Due Logo
- Select Scheduling
- Select Shift Board
Select the Employee to Move
- Right-click on the user you want to move
- On mobile, tap and hold the user’s name to access the action menu

Choose Move Employee
- Click Move Employee from the menu options

Define the New Assignment Details
- Select the Target Assignment
- Select the Target Position
- Select the Target Work Type (if applicable)
- Click Move

Confirm the Update
- The individual will be removed from their original assignment
- The individual will now appear in the newly selected assignment and position

Best Practices
- Verify qualifications before moving personnel to specialty or certification-required positions.
- Confirm the correct Work Type to ensure payroll accuracy.
- Communicate changes to affected personnel, especially for mid-shift adjustments.
- Review staffing minimums after moving personnel to avoid creating unintended vacancies.

Q: I do not see the Move Employee option.
A: Verify that you have the appropriate Shift Board permissions. If the option is missing, contact your Scheduling administrator.
Q: The employee did not move after I clicked Move.
A: Refresh the Shift Board and confirm the selected target assignment and position were correct before saving.
Q: Can I move someone on a future date?
A: Yes. Ensure you are viewing the correct date on the Shift Board before performing the move.
Q: Does moving an employee affect payroll reporting?
A: Yes. Assignment and work type selections may impact payroll, timecards, and reporting depending on department configuration.
