Purpose Statement
The Blood Log provides a centralized record of Whole Blood events completed within the Medications module.
Authorized users can use the Blood Log to review activity, inspect event details, verify signatures and seal information, filter records for audits, and download individual or grouped event documentation.
Important Note:
Whole Blood is a paid product upgrade. Agencies must work with First Due Implementation or Customer Success to add the feature to their contract and enabled it within their account.
Background Information
The Blood Log displays documented Whole Blood activity across the organization. Depending on the workflow completed, records may include events such as:
- Receive
- Usage
- Return
- Count
Each log entry provides summary information, including the event date, user, event type, Med Kit, and description.
The Blood Log can also support audit and reporting needs. Users can filter the list, review event details, download records, and create saved or custom views for frequently used searches.
Required Permissions
Users accessing and auditing the Blood Log must have the following permission:
- Whole Blood - Read Log
Additional access to the Medications module may also be required based on the agency's role configuration.

Step-by-Step Guide
1. Open the Blood Log
- Select the First Due logo.
- Navigate to Medications.
- Select Blood Log.
The Blood Log appears between Med Log and Setup in the Medications navigation.
2. Review Blood Log Entries
The Blood Log displays Whole Blood events recorded within the system.
Available columns may include:
- Date and Time
- User
- Event
- Med Kit
- Description
3. Organize Blood Log Entries
Users can reorganize columns and change the sort order to make relevant information easier to review.
To organize the Blood Log:
- Drag and reposition columns as needed.
- Select a column heading to change its sort order.
- Select the heading again to reverse the sort direction.
- Select the pin on the Date and Time column to lock it's positioning.
For example, sort by Date and Time to display the newest or oldest events first.
4. Search by Keyword
Use the keyword search to locate records containing a specific term.
For example:
- Enter Count to locate Count Events.
- Enter a Med Kit name.
- Enter a user's name.
- Enter another term contained within the available Blood Log fields.
Review the matching results.
Search results depend on the information recorded in the searchable Blood Log fields.
5. Filter Blood Log Records
- Select Filter.
- Enter the applicable criteria.
- Select Apply.
Available filters may include:
- Date and time range
- Event Type
- Blood Product
- Blood Type
- Other available record details
Select the pin icon to keep the filter panel open while reviewing or refining the results.
Keeping the panel open can be helpful during audits that require repeated adjustments to multiple filter criteria.
6. View an Individual Event
- Locate the applicable Blood Log entry.
- Select the eye icon.
The event detail view displays the information captured during the selected workflow.
Depending on the event, the details may include:
- Event description
- Product quantities
- Blood Unit IDs
- Temperature
- Seal number
- Signatures
- Other workflow-specific information
For Counts completed on a sealed Med Kit, the event details may display the documented seal number.
For a locked Med Kit or an event that does not require a seal, no seal number is displayed.
7. Review Event Signatures
From the event detail view:
- Select Signatures.
- Review the available signer information.
The displayed signatures reflect the agency's configured signature requirements at the time the event was completed.
8. Download Individual Event Data (CSV)
- Open the applicable event using the eye icon.
- Select Download.
- Open the generated CSV file.
The downloaded file contains tabular details for the selected Whole Blood event. Depending on the event, the file may include:
- Product Type
- Product Form
- Pouch
- Used quantity
- Wasted quantity
- Lot Number
- Expiration Date
- Units
- Blood Unit ID
The individual event download provides a CSV file containing the event data but does not include signatures. If you need a printable event record with signatures, select the event from the Blood Log, then use Bulk Actions > Individual Log to generate the signed event report.
| If you need... | Use... |
|---|---|
| Raw event data for analysis or import | Download (CSV) |
| A formatted event report with signatures | Bulk Actions > Individual Log |
Individual log entry CSV download:
9. Generate Formatted Event Reports
Use Bulk Actions to generate formatted reports that include complete event details and signatures.
- Select the checkbox beside one or more applicable Blood Log entries.
- Select Bulk Actions.
- Choose the desired report format.
This is especially useful when several events are part of the same operational sequence, such as a Usage Event, Receive Event, and Count completed within a Multi-Action Workflow.
Important Note:
Unlike the Download option within an individual event, Bulk Actions generates formatted reports designed for record-keeping, auditing, and printing.
10. Generate an Individual Log
Select Individual Log to create a formatted report for each selected event.
Each selected event is generated as its own report, typically on a separate page, and includes the event details and collected signatures.
Use the Individual Log when supervisors, auditors, or compliance personnel need a complete record of an individual Whole Blood event.
Important Note:
Unlike the individual event Download, the Individual Log includes signatures and is intended for documentation and audit purposes.
11. Generate a Detailed Log
Select Detailed Log to combine multiple selected events into a single formatted report.
The report preserves the event details and collected signatures for each selected event.
Use this format when related events should be reviewed together as one operational sequence.
12. Adjust Pagination
Use the pagination control to change the number of Blood Log records displayed on each page.
For example, increase the page size to display more results before reviewing or exporting a filtered list.
13. Use the Blood Log as a Report
The Blood Log can be used as an operational report by applying filters and downloading the resulting records.
For example:
- Filter by Usage.
- Enter the desired date range.
- Select Apply.
- Review the results.
- Download the applicable records.
This process can support internal reviews and external audit requests for specific Whole Blood event types.
14. Use Saved and Favorite Views
- Open the view dropdown.
- Select an available predefined or saved view.
- Select the favorite option to add the view to the Favorites folder.
- Select the pin option to make the view the default landing view.
A pinned view opens automatically when the user returns to the Blood Log.
15. Create a Custom View
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Add View or Clone View.
- Configure the available columns, filters, and layout.
- Save the view.
The Blood Log uses the same general custom list-view workflow available in other areas of the platform.
Important Note:
See the article on Medications: Creating Custom List Views to learn more about this workflow.
Best Practices
- Use date and event-type filters before downloading records for an audit.
- Verify that the filtered results include the full requested reporting period.
- Use Individual Log when each event must be reviewed separately.
- Use Detailed Log when several related events should appear in one consolidated file.
- Review signatures and seal information when validating count activity.
- Confirm that sealed-kit events include the expected seal information.
- Do not expect seal details for locked Med Kits.
- Create saved views for common audit requests, such as monthly Usages or overdue Counts.
- Pin the most frequently used view to reduce repeated setup.
- Use clear custom-view names that identify the event type, date range, or audit purpose.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Why can't I see the Blood Log in the Medications menu?
Confirm that Whole Blood is enabled for the agency and that your role includes the Whole Blood - Read Log permission.
Why is no seal number displayed for a count?
The Med Kit may be configured with a lock rather than a seal, or the event may not require seal documentation.
What is the difference between Individual Log and Detailed Log?
Individual Log separates each selected event into its own detailed record. Detailed Log combines the selected events into one consolidated document.
Can I download only one event?
Yes. Open the event using the eye icon and select Download.
Can I use the Blood Log for audits?
Yes. Apply filters for the requested date range, event type, product, or blood type, and then download the matching records.
Why are no results displayed after applying a filter?
The selected criteria may not match any recorded events. Review the date range, event type, blood product, and other filter values.
Can I save a frequently used filter setup?
Yes. Create or clone a custom view, then save, favorite, or pin it for future use.
Why are events from the same multi-action workflow displayed separately?
Each action is stored as its own event. Use the Detailed Log bulk action to display related events together in one consolidated file.
