Purpose Statement
Kit Group Validation Rules allow administrators to define the minimum number of kits that must remain assigned to an apparatus compartment. These validation rules help ensure required equipment is maintained on apparatus and prevent users from accidentally removing critical kits without acknowledgment.
By creating kit groups, departments can enforce equipment standards, improve accountability during inventory management, and maintain operational readiness.
Background Information
Kit groups are configured within an apparatus compartment and establish validation requirements for specific kit types. Rather than simply assigning kits to a compartment, a kit group defines the minimum quantity that must be present.
When a user attempts to remove a kit that would cause the compartment to fall below the required minimum, the system generates a validation warning. This helps prevent required equipment from being unintentionally removed while still allowing authorized users to document exceptions when necessary.
Kit groups can be configured for existing compartments or while creating a new compartment.

Step-by-Step Guide
1. Navigate to Apparatus Overview
Click the First Due logo to open the system navigation.
Select the Assets module.
Click Apparatus Overview.
2. Select the Apparatus
Locate the apparatus you want to configure.
Select Compartments within the apparatus record.
Click New Compartment to create a new compartment.
Alternatively, click the Edit (pencil) icon on an existing compartment to modify its configuration.
3. Select Asset Kit
Open the Kits section of the compartment configuration.
4. Add an Asset Kit Group
Click + Asset Kit Group.
Select the desired kit group from the dropdown list.
You can begin typing the kit group name to quickly locate it.
5. Configure Asset Kit Group Settings
Enter the minimum number of kits required from this group.
The system will validate the compartment against this required quantity.
Example: Setting a minimum of 2 Rope Bags requires two assigned Rope Bag kits in that group.
6. Add Kits to the Group
Click the kit field within the group.
Begin typing the name of the desired kit and select it from the list.
Continue adding kits until the group requirement is met.
If a kit assigned to the compartment already belongs to the selected kit group, it will automatically be included in the new kit group validation and count toward the required minimum quantity.
The system will display the current count, such as 2 of 2, when the requirement is satisfied.
Important Note:
Existing kits that are already assigned to the compartment and associated with the selected kit group do not need to be added again. They are automatically counted toward the group's validation requirement.
7. Manage the Kit Group (Optional)
The Kit Group header includes the following management options:
+ Kit: Adds additional kits to the group without changing the required minimum quantity.
Edit Kit Group: Allows users to adjust group settings, such as the minimum quantity.
Remove Kit Group: Deletes the kit group from the compartment configuration.
8. Save the Compartment Configuration
Review the kit assignments.
Click Save to apply the configuration.
The compartment will now enforce the defined kit group validation requirements. If a user later removes a kit and the compartment falls below the required minimum quantity, the system will display a validation warning.
Best Practices
- Create kit groups for equipment that should always remain assigned to an apparatus.
- Configure minimum quantities that align with your department's operational standards.
- Use kit groups to enforce required inventory while allowing flexibility to assign additional kits.
- Review kit group configurations periodically to ensure they accurately reflect apparatus inventory.
- Avoid creating duplicate kit groups for the same equipment type unless operationally necessary.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Why can't I save my new kit group?
The required minimum quantity has not been met. Add enough kits to satisfy the configured requirement before saving.
Why does the system warn me when I remove a kit?
Removing the kit would cause the compartment to fall below the minimum quantity defined by the kit group validation rule.
Can I change the required quantity after creating a kit group?
Yes. Edit the compartment, expand the kit group, adjust the minimum quantity, and save your changes.
Can I remove a kit group?
Yes. Open the kit group within the compartment, remove the group, and save your changes.
Can I create kit groups while adding a new compartment?
Yes. Kit groups can be configured during the creation of a new compartment or added later by editing an existing compartment.
Do I need to re-add kits that are already assigned to the compartment?
No. If an existing kit is already assigned to the compartment and belongs to the selected kit group, it is automatically included in the kit group validation and counts toward the required minimum.
