Purpose
Enable AI generation capabilities for fire incident narratives in the NERIS module. This permission allows authorized users to leverage artificial intelligence to assist with incident report documentation, reducing manual entry time and improving narrative consistency.
Background Information
The AI generation feature uses artificial intelligence to help create comprehensive incident narratives based on data entered in the NERIS report. This tool assists users in generating detailed, consistent narratives while maintaining compliance with NERIS reporting standards. The feature is particularly useful for streamlining documentation workflows and ensuring thorough incident descriptions.
Important Note: AI must be setup as an option for your agency configuration before it can be turned on as a permission. If you turn on the permission and still do not see the icon, please reach out to your Client Success Manager or Support.

Common Use Cases:
- Generating initial narrative drafts from incident data
- Standardizing narrative format across reports
- Reducing time spent on incident documentation
- Improving narrative completeness and accuracy
Required Permissions
To enable AI generation for users, you must have access to:
- Admin Module Access - Ability to access the Admin section
- Roles & Permissions Management - Permission to modify user roles and permissions
- NERIS - AI Generation Permission - Located in Incident Reporting > General Group
Video
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Navigate to the Admin module and select Roles & Permissions.

2. Select the Role to Edit.

3. Open Incident Reporting Permissions. From the Permissions tab, select Incident Reporting.

4. Navigate to the General Group and locate the NFIRS - AI generation permission, select Allow to enable that permission.

5. Remember to always select Save to update any changes.

Best Practices
Do:
- Enable for report-completing roles - Grant AI generation permission to roles that regularly complete NERIS incident reports
- Train on AI review processes - Ensure users understand how to review and edit AI-generated narratives for accuracy
- Verify before finalizing - Encourage users to verify all AI-generated content before submitting reports
- Document narrative standards - Maintain department-specific narrative standards that should be applied to all reports
- Test after configuration - Have users test the AI generation feature after enabling to confirm it's working correctly
Don't:
- Enable for non-reporting roles - Don't grant this permission to roles that don't have incident reporting responsibilities
- Skip the review process - Don't rely solely on AI-generated content without human review and verification
- Replace training - Don't assume AI generation replaces the need for thorough incident documentation training
- Forget to communicate - Don't enable the permission without informing users about the new capability and expectations
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Enabling the permission without verifying agency-level AI configuration is in place
- Failing to train users on proper AI narrative review and editing
- Not establishing clear guidelines for when and how to use AI generation
- Forgetting to inform users they need to log out and back in for permissions to activate
Troubleshooting & FAQS
Q: The AI generation option isn't appearing for my users after enabling the permission.
A: Ensure users have logged out and back in after the permission change. Permissions updates require a fresh session to take effect.
Q: Can I enable AI generation for multiple roles at once?
A: No, permissions must be configured individually for each role. However, you can clone an existing role configuration to speed up the process.
Q: Does enabling AI generation affect existing incident reports?
A: No, this permission only affects the ability to use AI generation for new or edited reports moving forward.
Q: Who should have access to AI generation?
A: Typically, field users, supervisors, and anyone responsible for completing NERIS incident reports should have this permission.
