Purpose Statement
This article explains how to create and manage permit statuses within the First Due platform for manual status. Custom statuses allow departments to align permit workflows with their internal review, inspection, and approval processes, improving tracking, visibility, and reporting throughout the permit lifecycle.
Background Information
Permit statuses represent each stage in a permit’s lifecycle—from submission to final approval or denial. Configuring custom statuses ensures your workflow accurately reflects operational procedures, regulatory requirements, and multi-step approvals.
Common use cases include:
- Defining stages such as Under Review, Inspection Required, or Approved
- Supporting different permit types (e.g., burn permits, special events)
- Managing multi-phase approvals across personnel or divisions
Statuses can be reordered, activated/deactivated, and designated as final to control editing behavior.
Required Permissions

This permission is required to create, edit, reorder, activate/deactivate, or delete permit statuses.

Best Practices
Status Naming
- Use clear, standardized naming conventions
- Keep terminology consistent across departments
- Prefer action-based names (e.g., Pending Review, Awaiting Inspection)
Workflow Design
- Arrange statuses in the actual order permits are processed
- Use Final Status sparingly and intentionally
- Test new workflows before full deployment
Status Management
- Periodically review and refine status structure
- Deactivate unused statuses instead of deleting them
- Document workflows for onboarding and training
