Completing an ePCR - Treatments

Purpose Statement

To explain how to complete the Treatments section of an ePCR in First Due, enabling EMS personnel to accurately document procedures, medications, and airway management performed during an incident. This section is critical for maintaining complete medical records, ensuring NEMSIS compliance, and supporting quality assurance processes.

Background Information

This section captures all interventions performed on the patient, including procedures, medications administered, and airway management devices used. Proper documentation in this section is essential for clinical continuity, billing accuracy, legal protection, and compliance with state and federal reporting requirements. The Treatments section integrates with NEMSIS standards and supports both basic and advanced life support documentation needs.
 

Required Permissions

Users must have the following permissions to complete the Treatments section:

  • My EMS Care Reports access - Ability to view and edit ePCR forms
  • Incident Documentation Write - Permission to modify incident records 
  • Treatment Documentation - Specific access to document procedures, medications, and airway management

Note: Field users typically have these permissions by default, while view-only roles may be restricted from editing treatment information.

Accessing the Treatments Section

  1. Navigate to Incident Documentation EMS Incident List
  2. Select the appropriate incident from the list or "Add New" ePCR.  
  3. Click on Treatments from the left-side menu of the ePCR
     

Documenting Protocols

  1. Locate the Protocols area within Treatments 
  2. Select +Add to document protocols used 
  3. The user can search inside the Protocol field or select the bulleted list to the right to display a list view of all Protocols 
  4. Select the appropriate age category related to the selected protocol 
  5. Click the Save button to document the protocol used.  
  6. Repeat the above steps for any additional protocols


 

Documenting Procedures

  1. Locate the Procedures section within Treatments
  2. Browse the alphabetically organized procedure list or use the search function to find the specific procedure
  3. Select the appropriate procedure from the procedure list
  4. Complete the procedure details window that appears, ensuring all required fields (marked with *) are filled
  5. Click the Save button to document the procedure
  6. Repeat the above steps for each additional procedure performed
     

Recording Medications

  1. Navigate to the Medications section within Treatments
  2. Browse the alphabetically organized medication list or use the search function to locate the specific medication
  3. Select the appropriate medication from the medication list
  4. Complete the medication administration window, including dosage, route, time, and response information
  5. Ensure all NEMSIS required fields (marked with *) are completed
  6. Click the Save button to document the medication
  7. Repeat the above steps for each medication administered during the incident
     

Managing Airway Documentation

  1. Access the Airway section within Treatments
  2. Select and document any invasive airway devices used during the incident
  1. For airway confirmations, click the Confirm button when documenting airway device verification
  2. Complete all required fields for airway confirmations as they appear
  3. Click the Save button to finalize airway documentation

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Q: I can't find a specific procedure in the list. What should I do?

A: Use the search function within the Procedures section. If the procedure still doesn't appear, contact your system administrator to verify it's included in your agency's procedure list.
 

Q: What if I made an error in medication dosage documentation?

A: Contact your supervisor or system administrator immediately. Depending on your agency's protocols, you may need to add an addendum or correction through the narrative section.
 

Q: The system won't let me save a procedure. What's wrong?

A: Ensure all required fields marked with an asterisk (*) are completed. Check that time fields are in the correct format and all dropdown selections are made.
 

Q: How do I document multiple attempts of the same procedure?

A: Document each attempt as a separate entry in the Procedures section, including the outcome of each attempt.
 

Q: What's the difference between procedures and medications sections?

A: Procedures include physical interventions (IV access, intubation, CPR), while medications specifically track pharmaceutical interventions administered to the patient.
