Purpose Statement
The Exposure Types setup page allows administrators to manage the exposure categories available when documenting an Exposure Report. This includes reviewing standard exposure types, creating custom exposure types, enabling or disabling options, and maintaining the list for agency use.
Background Information
Exposure Types are used throughout the Exposure workflow to classify the type of exposure being documented. The system includes four default exposure types out of the box:
- Traumatic
- Physical
- Chemical
- Biological
Agencies can also create custom exposure types to better match local policies, reporting needs, or specialized incident tracking requirements.
This setup area helps ensure users only see relevant exposure options when completing exposure documentation.
Required Permissions
Users typically need permissions related to:
- Exposure Setup
- Exposure Type Management
- Health & Wellness Administration
Because permission names may vary by agency configuration, confirm access with your system administrator if the Exposure Setup page is not available.

- Keep the Code short and unique to avoid confusion.
- Disable outdated Exposure Types rather than deleting them when you may need them for historical reference.
- Before deleting a custom Exposure Type, confirm it is no longer in use.
- Periodically review active Exposure Types to ensure the list remains clean and relevant for end users.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Why can’t I edit the default Exposure Types?
The four out-of-the-box Exposure Types are system-defined and cannot be edited or deleted.
Why can’t I delete an Exposure Type?
If the Exposure Type is currently being used in existing records, the system will prevent deletion and display an error message.
What happens if I disable an Exposure Type?
Disabled Exposure Types will no longer appear as selectable options when documenting a new Exposure, but historical records using that type remain unchanged.
Can I delete multiple custom Exposure Types at once?
Yes. Use the checkboxes next to eligible custom Exposure Types and then select the trashcan icon to perform a bulk delete.
What is the difference between disabling and deleting an Exposure Type?
Disabling removes it from future selection lists, while deleting removes the custom Exposure Type entirely if it is not in use.
