Understanding "Response Zone" vs "Fire Zone"

Understanding "Response Zone" vs "Fire Zone"

Purpose

  1. To understand the difference between "Response Zone" and "Fire Zone" fields in First Due.

Background

  1. First Due provides two tables (picklists) for assigning geographical areas to incident locations:

Fire Zone - This field is used to define geographical areas (zones) for incident locations. This table requires a shape file and is managed in conjunction with our implementation and client success team. This picklist cannot be directly managed by local admins.

Response Zone - Like "Fire Zone", this field is also used to define geographical areas (zones) for incident locations. This table is NOT dependent upon a shape file and is managed directly by an agency's First Due admin. Please see the Navigation section below for details. Response Zones are created in Admin -> Departments -> List of Response Zones.

NOTE #1: As an agency, you are able to use both Fire and Response Zones, however the best practice recommendation is to select just one.

NOTE #2: Only the Fire Zone table will auto populate the "Fire Zone" field in an NFIRS incident report based on the incident location (the system looks at the incident location address and the associated shape file to auto-populate that field).
The "Response Zone" is manually selected by the report writer.

Navigation

  1. To select which table(s) your agency will use for zones, navigate to Incident Documentation > NFIRS Setup.

  2. Navigate to Response > Location. Select the desired table(s) to be used for Zone documentation. Select Save.

  3. Examples of how your selection will appear in an NFIRS incident report:
