Training Setup: Topics

Purpose Statement

Topics allow Fire/EMS agencies to organize training content into focused subject areas under broader Categories. Topics serve as the middle tier in the training hierarchy and are used to group Objectives that define specific training outcomes.

Background Information

In First Due’s training system, the structure follows:

Categories → Topics → Objectives

  • Topics represent distinct training subjects (e.g., “SCBA Use,” “CPR Techniques”).

  • Each Topic is linked to one or more Categories and may contain multiple Objectives.

  • Topics can be created manually or imported in bulk, and they support consistent classification across training programs.

Once a Topic is used in a training class, it cannot be deleted—only deactivated.

Step-by-Step Guide

  2. Use the Search Area at the top to filter the list by keyword or status.

Best Practices

  • ✅ Use standardized naming for Topics to maintain consistency across training classes.

  • ✅ Associate Topics with appropriate Categories to ensure structured training delivery.

  • ✅ Deactivate rather than delete Topics to preserve historical training records.
