Assets Setup: Creating a Location Group

Assets Setup: Creating a Location Group

Purpose Statement

Location Groups help you organize operational locations (such as stations or other asset locations) so users can filter and manage assets by where they’re assigned or stored.

Background Information

Location-based grouping is often used to:

  • Separate assets by station, battalion, or district

  • Support easier filtering for station-level checks, audits, and work order visibility

  • Improve standardization when assets move between facilities

Prerequisites:

  • Locations (such as stations/storages) should already exist if you plan to assign them during group creation.

Required Permissions

To access Assets > Setup and manage setup-level configuration, users typically need an Assets setup permission (commonly Assets - Setup Settings).

For location grouping specifically, a setup permission is referenced as Assets - Setup Fire Station Group.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Navigate to the Assets module Setup

  • Navigate to Assets from the main menu

  • Select Setup

Step 2: Open the Location Groups tab

  • Click Location Groups

Step 4: Create a new group

  • Select New Location Group

Step 5: Enter group details

  • Enter a Group Name

  • (Optional) Add a Description (example: “All Station 2 facilities and storages”)

Step 6: Assign locations to the group

  • Open the Locations dropdown

  • Select one or more locations to include

Step 7: Save the group

  • Click Save

Step 8: Confirm the group was created

  • Verify the new group appears in the Location Groups list

Best Practices

  • Use clear, geo/ops-friendly names (example: “Battalion 1 Stations”).

  • Keep location groups aligned with how leadership reports performance and readiness.

  • Update groups when stations open/close, or when storages/assignments change.

  • Document rules in the description (example: “Includes reserve storage bays”).

Troubleshooting & FAQs

I can’t access Location Groups (or station grouping).

  • Confirm you have Assets Setup access (commonly Assets - Setup Settings).

  • For station grouping, confirm the station-group setup permission exists in your role (referenced as Assets - Setup Fire Station Group).

Why don’t my filters show the new group yet?

  • Refresh the page and confirm the group saved successfully and contains assigned locations.

Can I create a group without assigning locations?

  • Yes—create first, assign later.
