Purpose Statement
The Life Safety Systems feature provides Fire Prevention and Inspection personnel with a centralized, occupancy-level view of life safety systems associated with a property. This feature improves visibility into critical systems such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, standpipes, and suppression systems without requiring users to navigate into tactical Pre-Planning workflows.
By surfacing Life Safety Systems directly on the Occupancy record, agencies can streamline inspections, improve operational awareness, and establish a foundation for future ITM (Inspect, Test, Maintain) compliance workflows.
Background Information
Historically, life safety systems existed only as Pre-Plan Units within the Pre-Planning module. While effective for tactical response planning, this structure made it difficult for inspectors and prevention staff to quickly identify and manage systems from an inspection-focused workflow.
The Life Safety Systems tab introduces a prevention-first interface that:
- Reuses the existing Pre-Plan Unit data model
- Maintains consistency with current Pre-Plan functionality
- Avoids duplication of records
- Uses existing roles based access control and validation rules
- Establishes a scalable foundation for future ITM enhancements
Only Pre-Plan Units whose Unit Type is configured with the Life Safety System flag enabled will appear in this section.
Required Permissions
The Life Safety Systems feature uses existing Pre-Plan role-based access control.

Permission Behavior
- Users with Pre-Plan Read but without edit permissions can view records in read-only mode.
- Users without Pre-Plan Read cannot access the Life Safety Systems tab.
- Users without edit permissions cannot Add, Edit, or Delete systems.

Step-by-Step Guide
Access the Life Safety Systems Tab
- Open the desired Occupancy record.
- From the left-side navigation menu, select Life Safety Systems.
- Review the displayed list of systems associated with the occupancy.
View a Life Safety System
- Locate the desired system in the table.
Add a Life Safety System
- Open the Life Safety Systems tab.
- Click + Add System.
- Complete the standard Pre-Plan Unit form.
- Select a Unit Type from the dropdown list.
- Only Unit Types flagged as Life Safety Systems are available.
- Enter any additional details such as Description or Attachments.
- Click Accept.
After saving, the new system immediately appears in the Life Safety Systems table.
Edit a Life Safety System
- Locate the desired system.
- Select Edit pencil from the row actions menu.
- Update the necessary fields.
- Click Update.
The table refreshes automatically with the updated information.
Delete a Life Safety System
- Locate the desired system.
- Select Delete from the row actions menu.
- Confirm the deletion action.
The system follows existing Pre-Plan archive or deletion behavior based on agency configuration.
Best Practices
- Configure Unit Types carefully to ensure only appropriate systems appear in the Life Safety Systems tab.
- Use consistent naming conventions for Unit Types across occupancies.
- Attach relevant inspection documents, plans, or photos when applicable.
- Periodically review occupancy records to verify system inventories remain current.
- Avoid creating duplicate systems across Pre-Plan and Life Safety workflows since both use the same underlying record.
Troubleshooting & FAQs
Why can’t I see the Life Safety Systems tab?
Verify the user has the Pre-Plan Read permission assigned.
Why is a system not appearing in the list?
The associated Unit Type must have the Life Safety System flag enabled in Unit Type configuration.
Why can’t I add or edit systems?
The user likely does not have the required Pre-Plan edit permissions.
Can I create custom fields for Life Safety Systems?
No. Phase 1 does not introduce new fields or custom validations.
Are ITM compliance dates displayed?
No. ITM indicators, testing dates, and compliance information are explicitly out of scope for this release.
Does deleting a system permanently remove it?
Deletion follows existing Pre-Plan archive or hard-delete rules configured in your environment.
